The default renderer can do two kinds of rendering: use rendering and show rendering.
Most constructs look the same regardless of whether they are use or show rendered. Some constructs, however, have completely different use and show renderings.
As an example, take the newline construct. This is a show rendering of the newline construct: . You will never see the use rendering because the use rendering of a newline construct just inserts a \newline in the rendering.
Thus, if you use a newline, you get a newline. If you show a newline, you get .
The show rendering of a construct is used e.g. in the left hand side of definitions. The use rendering is used everywhere there is no particular reason for doing otherwise.
